Zoonotic Threats

This term refers to threats that can be passed from your pet to you or your children.

I had no idea diseases could be passed from pets to people. What are they and can I protect my family from them?

Dogs with roundworm and hookworm infection pose the risk of human exposure, especially in children. It is easy to prevent this exposure.

People may acquire these worms through contact with objects or areas contaminated by fecal matter of an infected dog such as:

  1. Playgrounds, beaches and sandboxes
  2. Crawl spaces under porches and houses
  3. Parks and other public spaces frequented by pets
  4. Even your own back yard

Roundworms can cause:

  • Damage to internal organs
  • Pneumonia
  • Partial or total blindness

Hook worms can cause:

  • Red, itchy skin rashes (commonly referred to as creeping eruption)
  • Severe stomach aches and nausea

Scooping up the stools alone may not be enough. Any fecal matter at all may contaminate the soil for years.

Do your children or children that you know ever play in the grass in your neighborhood or on the grass in a park? Please be a responsible pet owner and prevent such threats.

You can help protect your family and your neighborhood as well by using a heartworm preventative from us that protects from these internal parasites as well. You should also have your puppies and kittens dewormed on a regular basis, to get them started off on a safe note.
