If I use a heartworm preventative, why does my dog need a heartworm test?
A heartworm test is your insurance policy against the disease. An annual test is an inexpensive way to assure you that everything is ok. Sometimes people forget to give the preventative or perhaps the dog could have vomited the preventative in the yard without anyone noticing. Along with any number of other reasons, if your dog happened to acquire the microscopic parasite, the earlier the detection, the greater chance of success with treatment.
I see heartworm preventatives advertised on TV for sale on the internet and they tell me it is the same thing I get from my vet, only cheaper. Is this true?
While it may be true that you could save a couple of dollars (maybe), we have no idea if this is the same preventative you would purchase through us. Such manufacturers of heartworm prevention as Merial and Pfizer, do not supply these internet "pharmacies" with their products. The manufacturer does not know where these products originate from, and one could assume that they are not the real thing, possibly counterfeit. Consequently, the manufacturer will not stand behind these products. Therefore, if your pet were to come down with heartworm or an intestinal parasite, that it should not have, and you purchased your product from one of these outlets, there would be no guarantee, and the financial burden of treatment would be yours. It is in you and your pet's best interest to purchase your heartworm preventative only through your veterinarian.
Using one of our highly recommended heartworm preventatives purchased from us, along with an annual heartworm test, can give you peace of mind that you are doing all that you can do to prevent this terrible disease.
